About the Facilitator:

Lisa Weiner is a nurse practitioner, faculty member at the Neufeld Institute (NI), NI certified parent consultant and L2 IFS Practitioner. Using her mastery of the Relational Developmental Approach articulated by Dr. Gordon Neufeld Lisa supports parents in deeply understanding attachment and the conditions conducive to the unfolding of emotional health and maturity in their children and teenagers. When parents have “parts” of them that get in the way of being able to provide what their children need, Lisa skillfully weaves IFS into her sessions so that parents can befriend these parts, get to know why they do what they do and, ultimately, release any burdens that are blocking their access to their inherent open-hearted Self-led parenting. In addition to parent consulting, Lisa is a beloved teacher of Neufeld Institute classes, where she teaches to an international audience with her down-to-earth blend of humor, story and ability to make complex and nuanced theory accessible and inspiring.

Lisa is also a writer, editor and speaker and would love to help you edit your next book on parenting or IFS or to come speak at your school or event. Contact her at lisa@lisaweiner.coach.

Description:

In this daylong workshop for therapists and/or parents (non-therapists are welcome and encoruaged), we will explore the Counterwill instinct. This instinct, which has beautiful developmental purposes, can lead to issues in parenting and teaching when it becomes stuck or is misunderstood. In this workshop, we will explore its purposes, the most common reasons it can become stuck, how the ways we often respond to it often make it worse and, finally, what are attachment and developmentally friendly ways to work with Counterwill.

Educational Goals:

  • Understand the purposes of the Counterwill instinct
  • Understand how and why it can be heightened or stuck in certain kids or teens
  • Understand how common responses to Counterwill can perpetuate it
  • Understand PDA through the Counterwill lens
  • Gain new skills in how to work with, and respond to, Counterwill
  • Gain insight into how our own Counterwill often becomes activated when dealing with Counterwill in kids and teens

Learning Objectives:

  • Participants will be able to identify the two developmental purposes of Counterwill.
  • Participants will be able to explain how some common methods of dealing with Counterwill perpetuate it.
