Coaching

The main difference between a therapist and a coach is that a coach does not address past trauma. Both a coach and a therapist are trained to support children, teens and adults with goal setting, anxiety / anger management tools, optimal performance in school / career / sports, and positive family dynamics. However a coach will not provide introspective processing of past experiences of trauma or help explore the root cause of why the client is the way they are. Instead a coach will support the client in implementing positive changes and personal success through a more straightforward, goal oriented, skills based approach.

Especially in the cases of children and teens, they may know that they feel unfulfilled or stuck but they may not be able to understand why. They may not be getting their homework done on time. They may not have friendships that are fulfilling. A coach can help these clients find out how to make their lives better by helping them explore and make choices with simple structured steps and strategies. This in turn can help them feel more empowered and able to become more independent in finding positive outcomes.

Adults may be more aware of the issues they are facing. Whether it is family dynamics or career growth, there are many ways an adult can benefit from the support of a coach. The coach can support them by helping them set clear boundaries and goals for themselves and provide them with tools to implement them. A coach can also show the adult client how to optimize their potential with a skills based approach.

Once clients have a clear sense and purpose with personal goals that can be well articulated, a coach can advocate, motivate, and support them in realizing these overarching goals that they created for themselves. This in turn can benefit the clients in feeling a new purpose in their lives.
